Maine Children's Cancer Walk

GYSA has participated in the Maine Children’s Cancer Program Walk since 2002, under Lauren’s Team.  Lauren’s Team was formed in honor of Lauren Hawkes, an 11 year old girl who lived in Gorham, played soccer and loved to dance.  Lauren was diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia in 2001.  Though she walked with us the first year, she died of her disease in July of 2003.  Every year since Lauren’s passing, GYSA has walked in her memory and at the 2013 Walk, GYSA players raised more than $7,200.  Since 2001, Lauren's Team has raised more than $192,000 for the Maine Children's Cancer Program!

The Maine Children’s Cancer Program is vital to the state because it allows children who have been diagnosed with cancer and other blood disorders to receive their treatment in Maine.  All the money raised goes to the program directly, allowing it to provide medical and psychosocial services.  Walking and raising money as part of Lauren’s Team has become a part of the club, and an incredible way to give back to the community and to honor children that have been affected by cancer.  The GYSA players, siblings, coaches and parents that participate in the walk always come away with a new appreciation and awareness of other children and the fact that not everyone can run and play like they can.  It brings this group together and teaches them to work as a team both on and off the field. We look forward to having as many of our players as possible participate in this year's walk!
